GES explains why the reopening date for first-year SHS students has been extended.

An official of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has explained why the management of his outfit rescheduled the reopening date for first-year Senior High School students from September 18, 2023, to September 25, 2023.

Speaking to the Daily Graphic newspaper on the development, he said “Because of the double track system, if the original date was made to stand, the schools might not be able to contain the number of students at a time.”

The GES official added that even though the last paper of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) would be written on September 26, “most of the final year students would have finished writing and left.”

He further explained that the number of final-year students sitting for the ongoing 2023 WASSCE who would remain in school by September 25, 2023, would have reduced and therefore would have no effect on accommodation.

“So, after consultation with the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service, we agreed to shift the reopening date to September 25, 2023, to make room for the final year students to complete their examination,” he explained.

His comment follows the postponement of first-year Senior High School and Senior High Technical School (SHS/SHTS) students across the country reopening date to 2023 September 25, 2023, by the Ghana Education Service (GES).

Earlier slated for September 18, 2023, the Education Service in a letter shared with AcademicWeek.com said Regional Directors of Education are to communicate the new reopening date to heads of second-cycle schools in their region.

“Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) wishes to inform all Heads of Senior High and Senior High Technical Schools that the reopening date for Form One students has been rescheduled to September 25, 2023

“Regional Directors of Education are requested to communicate this information to all Head of Senior High and Senior High Technical Schools to inform parents and students to take note of the new date and prepare accordingly,” it said.
