First-year SHS students to sit for placement test after BECE – MoE

Effective next academic year, public Senior High Schools and Senior High Technical Schools across the country will conduct a placement test for first-year students, the Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has said.

In an interview monitored by Passcogh, the Education Minister said the upcoming placement examination forms part of an effort to assist Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) graduates who can not read or write.

“From next year, Senior High Schools will conduct placement examinations for first-year students. An intervention program will be done for BECE graduates who will fail the second cycle placement examination.” Adutwum said.

The number of subjects to be studied by the first-year Senior High School students who fail the examination, the Minister in Charge of Education said would be reduced to enable them to focus on areas they are academically poor.

In a related development, the management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has rescheduled first-year Senior High School and Senior High Technical School (SHS/SHTS) students reopening date to September 25, 2023.

Earlier slated for September 18, 2023, the Education Service in a letter shared with AcademicWeek.com said Regional Directors of Education are to communicate the new reopening date to heads of second-cycle schools in their region.

“Management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) wishes to inform all Heads of Senior High and Senior High Technical Schools that the reopening date for Form One students has been rescheduled to September 25, 2023

“Regional Directors of Education are requested to communicate this information to all Head of Senior High and Senior High Technical Schools to inform parents and students to take note of the new date and prepare accordingly,” it said.
